Spring has sprung!

The days are growing longer,  Daylight Savings time has begun,  the oak trees are getting new leaves and shedding the old, and the hens are laying double time!  Yes, Spring is here!

Because this winter lasted unusualy long (so much for global warming), I had to postpone planting my spring garden.  But, I'm pretty sure the danger of frost is over for the season, so I finally put in the veggies. On the West side of the house I've planted yellow squash, zucchini, cukes,Japanese and Black Beauty eggplant, and bell peppers.  I had extra zucchini plants, so I put three out around the flag pole in the front yard.  In my raised bed, I have lots of tomatoes, carrots, red onions and bush beans.  I've toyed with the thought of planting corn this year, but I don't know if my back can take the tilling and soil amendments necessary.  I haven't had the best of luck with squash in the past, so I made sure to add lots of manure and moisture retaining compost to the garden.

It looks like my plumbagos did not survive the many frosts and freezes of the winter, so now I have to figure out what to plant along the fron t of the house.  The azaleas didn't survive there, either.  I'm thinking of just putting in some junipers so there will be some green and perhaps the chickens won't eat those.

Drumstick, our turkey hen, is feeling very lonely.  She's the only turkey we have and the chickens ignore her.  This is mating season and she's feeling particularly down. I wish I could find a tom turkey for her.  In the meantime, Sparrow and I will just try to show her lots and lots of affection.
