Guilt is a gift from God

Yes, you read right.  I truly believe that guilt is a blessed gift from God!  Guilt is what may keep us from doing something wrong.  It's what lets us know when we've done something wrong.  It's what lets us know that we are all sinners in need of a Savior!

In this day and age folks will do anything to asuage their feelings of guilt.  They rationalize that what they are doing is not so bad.  They try to tell themselves and others that it's natural and so can't be bad.  They look to put the blame of their guilt on others and circunstances.  "I steal because I am poor."  "I drink because I have a lot of stress in my life." "I cheat on my spouse because they don't pay atention to me."  "I'm gay because that's how I was made."  That last one can be easily dismissed just looking at biology.  We were made to mate with the opposite sex.  Period.  That's how God made us.  I'll let you know where to send your hate mail later.

God gave us this feeling of guilt to help us know what He considers sin and to help us recognize it.  It's called a conscience, that still, small voice that lets us know we've blown it.  Everyone has felt it.  Everyone intrinsically knows it's wrong to steal, wrong to kill, wrong to bear false witness, etc.  God has inscribed His laws on our hearts and even those who don't believe in God know His rules.

So, the next time you are feeling guilty about something, stop, drop and pray.  Ask God to forgive you.  Recognize what it is you've done or not done that you should have and fix it,  then try not to do it again. Of course, we are usually unable to do that in the natural.  To truly break the cycle of sin we need help and the only one who can give us that help is Jesus.  He alone can give you a new heart and help keep you from straying.

As for the hate mail, I'll have you take up your grievances with my boss...God.
