A Life Worth Living

Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska and the new Republican V.P. Candidate, is the mother of a Down's syndrome baby.  Some on the left have held her in contempt because she chose to give birth to her son, knowing he would be disabled, instead of aborting him, as most mothers who learn their babies are disabled now do.  I applaud Governor Palin and her husband.  As the mother of a disabled son, I know how hard life can be for both child and parent.  But, knowing what I know now about autism and the tough times we went through with Hilary, if there had been a prenatal test for autism, I would not even have it done.  I would not trade my son, Hilary for ANYTHING!  He is my joy.  He is my happiness.  He shows me daily what true love is and what life can be.  Even during the hardest times while he was growing up, I would not have wanted to not have him.  Believe me, there were hard times!  Like when he wouldn't sleep more than an hour or two a night and threw everything, including furniture, around and screamed for hours on end.  When we had to plan our routes driving anywhere to avoid fast food restaurants and car dealerships with balloons for fear of setting him off, and when he would kick and scream because he didn't want to do something.  Every aspect of our lives was ruled by Hilary and his special needs and behaviors.  Through the grace of God, we made it through and now he is a pure joy.  Yes, he still has melt-downs and behaviors that are trying, but the love he shows, the talents and gifts he has, the wonder he exhibits over things we tend to ignore, more than makes up for any hardship.  If anyone thinks a person who is disabled cannot lead a full and happy life, I invite them to check out my son.  He is able to see the beauty in life and the everyday that most people have become immune to.  With our day -to -day routines, work, paying bills, running errands, sitting dazed in front of the boob tube, tell me, who is really living their life to the fullest?  I guarantee it's people like my son, Hilary.  Thank you , Lord, for blessing us with this beautiful life and spirit!
